How to Book KTX Tickets as a Foreigner in Korea: 2026 Guide

First Korea Trip · Updated September 21, 2026

Last fact-checked: September 21, 2026

Foreign travelers can book KTX tickets through KORAIL’s foreign-language website, the KORAIL+ app, or a station ticket counter. For most tourists, the official online route is the simplest: search your train, choose a seat, pay, save the ticket, and board the correct car and seat at the station.

KORAIL supports foreign-issued cards through its foreign-language booking system. An August 21 notice about overseas-card payments was a temporary suspension for system maintenance, not a standing ban. If an online payment fails, first confirm whether a ticket was actually issued before trying again; at the station, use a foreign-card-capable vending machine where available or ask at the ticket counter.

Quick answer

  • Official online booking: use KORAIL’s foreign-language website or the KORAIL+ app.
  • Old app name: KorailTalk was replaced by KORAIL+ in August 2026.
  • When tickets open: normally about one month before departure, generally from 07:00 Korea time.
  • Seat choice: reserve a specific seat when the booking screen offers seat selection.
  • Foreign cards: KORAIL supports overseas cards through its foreign-language booking system; if online payment fails, confirm the booking status before retrying and use a station machine or counter as a backup.
  • Backup: major-station ticket counters are the safest fallback for payment or booking problems.

Where Can a Foreigner Book KTX Tickets?

You have three practical options: KORAIL’s foreign-language website, the KORAIL+ mobile app, or a railway-station ticket counter. These are the channels to understand first before looking at third-party booking sites.

1. KORAIL foreign-language website

This is the standard official web option for international travelers. KORAIL has expanded its multilingual website to seven languages and provides foreign travelers with ticket reservation and booking-information services.

When searching online, do not assume a website is official just because its name contains “KTX.” The railway operator is KORAIL, so check that you are using KORAIL’s own booking service before entering payment details.

2. KORAIL+ app

KORAIL+ launched on August 3, 2026 as the successor to KorailTalk. Existing KorailTalk users can update the app, while new users can install KORAIL+ from their app store. KORAIL says the foreign-user service supports seven languages.

3. Station ticket counter

A station counter is the best backup when online payment fails, you need a same-day ticket, or you are unsure whether a booking was completed. Major KTX stations are used to serving foreign travelers, although the level of language assistance can vary by station.

When Can You Book KTX Tickets?

KTX tickets normally go on sale about one month before departure, generally from 07:00 Korea time. If your Seoul–Busan, Seoul–Gyeongju-area, or other long-distance travel date is fixed, there is little advantage in waiting until the last minute.

Weekend evenings, Sunday return periods, holiday weekends and popular travel seasons can sell out earlier than an ordinary weekday. If two or more people must sit together, booking early matters even more because scattered individual seats may remain after adjacent seats are gone.

Important: Lunar New Year and Chuseok use special reservation schedules. Do not rely on the normal one-month rule for major Korean holidays; use KORAIL’s dated holiday notice for the year you are traveling.

How to Book KTX on the KORAIL Website

Use KORAIL’s official foreign-language booking service to search routes, dates and available trains.
  1. Open KORAIL’s foreign-language booking service. Confirm that you are on the official KORAIL service before continuing.
  2. Enter your departure and arrival stations. For example, choose Seoul as the departure station and Busan as the destination.
  3. Select the travel date and number of passengers. Check the date carefully before searching.
  4. Choose a train. Compare departure time, arrival time and seat class. Make sure the result is the train you actually want, not simply the first result displayed.
  5. Select your seat when available. Use the seat-reservation option rather than assuming the system will keep two travelers together.
  6. Enter the requested passenger and payment information. If a name is requested, use the Romanized spelling you normally use for travel documents.
  7. Complete payment. Do not treat a bank authorization notification alone as proof that the KTX reservation exists.
  8. Confirm the ticket was actually issued. Save the booking confirmation, reservation number and ticket so you can retrieve them even if your mobile connection is poor later.

Do not double-pay by accident. If your bank shows a card authorization but the KORAIL page does not show a completed booking, check your KORAIL booking record before submitting payment again.

KORAIL+ Is the Current Official App

KORAIL Plus app screen for booking train tickets in Korea
KORAIL+ replaced KorailTalk in August 2026 and is the current official KORAIL booking app.

If another travel guide tells you to download KorailTalk, that information is now dated. KORAIL+ replaced it in August 2026 and is the current app name.

KORAIL+ simplifies search filters and the payment flow and is useful for keeping your train bookings in one place while traveling. It is also the more practical official channel if you expect to make or manage bookings on your phone during the trip.

For trains operating from September 1, 2026 onward, KTX and SRT search and booking are being integrated into the KORAIL+ ecosystem. This article focuses on booking KTX; do not assume that every KTX rule, pass or discount automatically applies to SRT simply because the app can display both.

Foreign Credit Cards: What to Do If Payment Fails

KORAIL’s foreign-language reservation system supports foreign-issued credit cards. KORAIL also reported in January 2026 that 310 newer vending machines at 148 stations support overseas-card payments, giving travelers another official option if online checkout is inconvenient.

KORAIL did post an overseas-card payment suspension notice on August 21, 2026, but the notice was for a temporary system-maintenance interruption. It should not be read as an ongoing policy that foreign cards are blocked.

If payment does not complete, check whether KORAIL actually issued the ticket before submitting the charge again. If you still cannot pay online, use a foreign-card-capable station vending machine where available or ask at the ticket counter. Card acceptance can still depend on the card issuer and transaction, so keep a second payment option available.

Standard Class, First Class and Seat Selection

For most tourists, Standard Class is the normal choice. First Class costs more and offers a higher service level, but you do not need it simply because you are traveling with luggage or taking a long route.

When seat selection is available, use it. Check whether you are choosing a window or aisle seat and whether two travelers are actually placed together. Some booking screens may also distinguish the direction the seat faces.

If reserved seats are sold out, KORAIL may offer other ticket types on some services, but standing or non-reserved availability is not guaranteed on every train. Tourists carrying large luggage should not build a trip around the assumption that a sold-out KTX will always have a usable standing ticket.

Do You Need to Print a KTX Ticket?

You do not need to think of KTX as a system where every foreign tourist must collect a paper ticket before boarding. Official online booking supports electronic ticket and booking-information management.

Keep the official ticket or booking record available on your phone. Save the train number, date, departure time, departure station, car number and seat number for reference, but do not rely on a screenshot as your only valid ticket display.

What happens at the station?

Check the train number, platform, car and seat before boarding your KTX.
  1. Check the departure board for your train number and platform.
  2. Go to the platform before departure and find the position for your car number.
  3. Board the correct train and car.
  4. Sit in the seat printed or displayed on your ticket.
  5. Keep the ticket accessible in case a conductor needs to verify it.

KTX does not require tourists to perform an airline-style check-in. The important part is having a valid ticket for the correct train and sitting in the assigned seat.

What If Your KTX Train Is Sold Out?

First, search nearby departure times rather than abandoning the route. A popular Seoul–Busan departure can be full while trains before or after it still have seats.

  • Check earlier and later KTX departures.
  • If traveling as a group, see whether separate seats are available even if adjacent seats are not.
  • Recheck availability later because cancellations can return seats to inventory.
  • Ask a station counter about same-day alternatives if you are already in Korea.

For Chuseok or Lunar New Year, special booking rules apply. Check KORAIL’s current holiday reservation notice because the sales dates and process change by season.

How to Buy KTX Tickets at a Station Counter

A station ticket counter is the safest backup when online KTX payment or booking does not work.

If online booking is not working, go to the ticket counter at a major railway station and show the route, date, preferred departure window and number of passengers. Having the information written on your phone reduces misunderstandings.

Example to show the staff:
Seoul → Busan

2 adults
08:00–09:00 departure
Standard Class
Seats together if possible

Bring your passport when dealing with an existing foreign booking, payment problem or any issue involving passenger information. KORAIL PASS has separate passport and eligibility requirements from an ordinary point-to-point KTX ticket.

Incheon Airport to KTX: Go Through Seoul Station

AREX connection between Incheon Airport and Seoul Station for a KTX transfer
For most first-time visitors, the simplest airport connection is Incheon Airport → AREX → Seoul Station → KTX.

For a first-time visitor connecting from Incheon International Airport to a KTX departing Seoul, the easiest route to understand is Incheon Airport → AREX → Seoul Station → KTX.

According to VISITKOREA, the AREX Express takes about 43 minutes from Terminal 1 to Seoul Station and about 51 minutes from Terminal 2. The All-Stop Train takes roughly 59 and 66 minutes respectively.

Do not book a tight KTX connection based only on the AREX ride time. International arrivals also require immigration, baggage collection, walking through the terminal, waiting for the next airport train and navigating Seoul Station to the KTX platform.

For the airport leg itself, see our Incheon Airport to Seoul: AREX, Bus or Taxi? guide.

What About Large Luggage?

KORAIL’s foreigner guidance says passengers should carry luggage they can handle themselves and gives a basic limit of up to two carry-on items. Do not assume KTX luggage works like an airline checked-baggage system.

Large suitcases are common on tourist routes, but storage space is not guaranteed next to every seat. Arrive early enough to find your car and store luggage without blocking aisles or doors.

FAQ

What is the official KTX booking app in 2026?

KORAIL+. It replaced the old KorailTalk app in August 2026.

How early can foreigners book KTX tickets?

Normally about one month before departure, generally from 07:00 Korea time. Major holidays can use a separate special-booking schedule.

Can I pay for KTX with a foreign credit card?

Yes. KORAIL supports foreign-issued cards through its foreign-language booking system. If online payment fails, confirm whether the ticket was issued before retrying; foreign-card-capable station vending machines and ticket counters are practical backups.

Do I need to print my KTX ticket?

Not necessarily. Keep the official ticket or booking record available electronically, and save an offline copy as a backup.

Do I need a passport to buy a normal KTX ticket?

The official material reviewed for this guide does not establish a universal rule that every ordinary KTX purchase requires a passport number. However, carry your passport when resolving foreign-booking, payment or passenger-information problems. KORAIL PASS has stricter passport requirements.

Can I buy KTX tickets after arriving in Korea?

Yes. Station ticket counters are a practical official backup, but popular trains can sell out, so waiting until the travel day reduces your choices.

Is KORAIL PASS covered in this guide?

Only briefly. KORAIL PASS is a separate product with its own eligibility, passport, seat-reservation and refund rules. Use KORAIL’s official KORAIL PASS page if you are considering a rail pass instead of ordinary point-to-point tickets.
