Seoul Winter Festivals 2026–2027: Which Ones Are Actually Worth Your Time?

First Korea Trip · Updated October 1, 2026

Last fact-checked: October 1, 2026 · How we verify travel information

A Seoul winter festival is easiest to enjoy when it fits into an evening you already have—not when it forces you to rebuild the trip around one seasonal event.

The central Gwanghwamun–Cheonggyecheon cluster has the lowest planning cost for a first trip because it sits beside places you may already visit. The Han River events make more sense as a dedicated winter outing. DDP is more specialized, and Bosingak is really a New Year’s Eve decision rather than a normal festival stop.

Seoul’s official 2026 festival information is not fully consistent on the umbrella festival start date. A Seoul Metropolitan Government festival-planning release lists December 4, 2026 to January 31, 2027, while the city’s separate 2026 holidays and annual-events page currently lists December 14, 2026 to January 31, 2027. Use the confirmed dates for individual events when planning a specific evening, and recheck the umbrella schedule closer to your trip.

Start With the Evening You Already Have

For most first-time visitors, the Gwanghwamun–Cheonggyecheon cluster gives the best return on your time. You are already close to Gyeongbokgung, central Jongno and major subway lines, so a winter light event can be added to a normal sightseeing day instead of consuming a separate half-day.

The Han River events are more destination-like: worth the trip if you specifically want a Christmas market or winter riverside atmosphere, but not essential if your Seoul schedule is already packed. DDP becomes more attractive for travelers interested in media art or K-content. Bosingak is a special case — it is not a normal evening festival stop, but a New Year’s Eve event worth considering only if you actively want the countdown crowd.

Gwanghwamun and Cheonggyecheon — The Lowest-Friction Choice

Seoul Light Gwanghwamun currently has one of the clearest confirmed schedules: December 11, 2026 to January 3, 2027 at Gwanghwamun Square. Seoul describes it as a large-scale media-art event using light and music in one of the city’s most recognizable public spaces.

Seoul Light Gwanghwamun uses large-scale media art on one of central Seoul’s most recognizable landmarks.

The same area is expected to host the 2026 Gwanghwamun Market, modeled after a European-style Christmas market with small-business booths, seasonal goods, food, photo zones and visitor activities. The official Fun Seoul listing currently confirms December, but not the exact opening and closing dates.

A short walk away, the 2026 Seoul Lantern Festival is scheduled for the Cheonggyecheon area. The city currently confirms a December event but has not published precise 2026 dates. The festival traditionally focuses on lantern installations, light art and interactive displays along the stream.

Lantern installations along Cheonggyecheon are one of central Seoul’s signature winter festival sights.
  • Choose this area if: this is your first Seoul trip or you only have one winter evening.
  • Main advantage: several attractions can be reached on foot.
  • Planning risk: market and lantern-festival dates are not fully confirmed yet.

Hangang Winter Events — Better as a Dedicated Evening

The 2026 Hangang River Festival – Winter is currently listed for December 18–27, 2026 across the Han River and 11 Hangang parks. Seoul’s current description emphasizes winter rest spaces and seasonal programs rather than one single concentrated attraction.

The Hangang Christmas Market is separately listed as planned for December 18–27 at Ttukseom Hangang Park. Because the listing still labels the dates as planned, do not build a non-refundable itinerary around it without checking again closer to your trip.

A winter market beside the Han River offers a more destination-like evening than the central Seoul festival cluster.

This is a better choice if you have already seen central Seoul and want a seasonal evening by the river. It is a weaker choice for a very short trip because the Han River program is more spread out than the Gwanghwamun cluster, and winter wind near the river can make a long outdoor visit feel much colder.

DDP and SEOULCon — A More Specialized Stop

DDP is part of Seoul’s broader winter-festival network, but the 2026 Seoul Light DDP winter schedule is not stable enough yet to treat one date range as final. Seoul’s annual event schedule lists a December 10–31 window, while the current Fun Seoul festival page shows a different placeholder-style December listing. Check the dedicated DDP or Seoul festival page again before planning around it.

SEOULCon is clearer: the current official listing shows December 29, 2026 to January 1, 2027 at DDP. The program is aimed at global creators and K-content audiences, with K-pop, fashion, beauty, exhibitions, conferences and related programs. For a general first-time tourist it is optional; for a K-content-focused trip it can become a main event.

Bosingak New Year’s Eve — Only When the Countdown Is the Point

The New Year’s Eve Bell-Ringing Ceremony at Bosingak is scheduled from December 31, 2026 to January 1, 2027. The official listing currently describes pre-event performances, the bell-ringing and artwork around the Bosingak area.

Bosingak becomes a major crowd event on New Year’s Eve, very different from a normal winter-festival evening.

Go because you want the New Year countdown itself, not because it is the most efficient sightseeing option. This is a major public celebration, so expect a very different experience from walking through a light festival on a normal December evening. Transport controls, crowd-management measures and detailed access information should be checked again shortly before December 31.

Where the Confirmed Dates Actually Overlap

If your dates are flexible, the strongest currently confirmed overlap is December 18–27, 2026. During that window, Seoul Light Gwanghwamun is running, the Hangang River Festival – Winter is scheduled, and the Hangang Christmas Market is planned. Gwanghwamun Market and Seoul Lantern Festival are also expected in December, although their exact 2026 dates still need confirmation.

Travel datesWhat is currently useful to know
Dec. 4–10One official Seoul festival plan lists the umbrella festival from Dec. 4, but another current city page lists Dec. 14. Do not use the umbrella start date alone to plan this week.
Dec. 11–17Seoul Light Gwanghwamun is confirmed from Dec. 11. Recheck the broader festival schedule and other central events before building the evening around them.
Dec. 18–27Best current overlap for Gwanghwamun plus confirmed/planned Han River winter events.
Dec. 29–Jan. 1Strong for SEOULCon and New Year’s Eve; the Han River winter festival has ended by then.
Jan. 2–3Seoul Light Gwanghwamun is still scheduled; some Christmas-focused events may already be finished.
Jan. 4–31The umbrella Seoul Winter Festival continues, but check which individual programs remain active.

Keep the Central Events Together; Treat DDP and Ttukseom Separately

If the final dates overlap, the most efficient winter route is Gwanghwamun Square → Cheonggyecheon → Seoul Plaza → Bosingak. These areas form a practical central cluster and are easier to combine than adding DDP or Ttukseom to the same walk.

  1. Start around Gwanghwamun after dark for Seoul Light and, when operating, Gwanghwamun Market.
  2. Walk toward Cheonggyecheon for the lantern displays when the 2026 festival dates are confirmed.
  3. Continue toward Seoul Plaza if its seasonal winter programs fit your evening.
  4. Finish near Bosingak and Jonggak, then take the subway onward.

DDP is better treated as a separate stop or reached by subway. Ttukseom Hangang Park is a separate riverside outing. Trying to force all of them into one night usually creates more transit than festival time.

What Is Still Not Confirmed for Winter 2026–2027?

As of October 1, 2026, Seoul has published enough information to plan the broad winter period, but not every individual event is ready for day-by-day itinerary planning.

  • Gwanghwamun Market: December confirmed, exact dates pending.
  • Seoul Lantern Festival: December confirmed, exact dates pending.
  • Seoul Light DDP Winter: official Seoul sources currently show inconsistent date information.
  • Individual admission, reservation and operating-hour details: not uniformly published for all winter events yet.
  • Seoul Plaza ice rink: expected as part of Seoul’s winter program, but the 2026–27 detailed operating schedule should be checked after the dedicated announcement is published.

For a December or January trip, recheck the official event page shortly before departure. Seasonal event dates can shift, and individual programs may have shorter runs than the overall Seoul Winter Festival.
