Nokkome Oreum + Blackish Red Cafe: An Inland Aewol Route in Jeju
First Korea Trip · Updated October 6, 2026
Last fact-checked: October 6, 2026
Aewol is usually associated with the coast, but the inland side of Aewol feels completely different. During my month in Jeju, I visited Nokkome Oreum and Blackish Red Cafe on separate days. After seeing both, they stood out as two stops that make sense to combine into one inland Aewol route.
I climbed Nokkome Oreum on September 26, 2026, and visited Blackish Red on September 21, 2026. So this is not a claim that I did both on the same day. It is a route suggestion based on two places I actually visited and photographed.
The practical order is simple: hike first, then stop at the cafe afterward.

Why I Would Combine Nokkome Oreum and Blackish Red
The main reason is location. Both are on the inland side of Aewol, away from the beach-heavy route around Handam and Gwakji.
That makes this a useful contrast to the Aewol coastal route I wrote about separately. The coast is for sea views and walking along the shoreline. This route is more about forest, elevation and a quiet cafe afterward.
I would do the oreum first. Once you sit down at the cafe, there is not much reason to get back in the car and start a steep hike.
Hiking Nokkome Oreum in Jeju
Visit Jeju lists Keun Nokkome Volcanic Cone in Aewol and rates the hike as Very Difficult. The official page describes it as a large volcanic cone in Jeju’s northwestern mid-mountain area, around 800 meters above sea level, with a steep ascent before the trail becomes gentler near the crater rim.
The entrance area has route information, and the trail begins through a more open section before moving into forest. On the day I went, the ground was wet in places and the weather was cloudy.

I also came across horses near the trail. Visit Jeju’s Nokkome guide specifically notes that the route passes through a ranch area and that hikers may encounter loose horses on the way.
What the Nokkome Trail Was Actually Like
The first part did not feel especially dramatic. There were stretches of open road and forest, and then the climb became more obvious as I went higher.

Visit Jeju’s hiking guide says the route from the parking area to the top is about 2.3 km and notes that the steeper sections come later. That matches the basic shape of the hike I saw: easier approach first, harder climbing after that.
If the ground is wet, footwear matters. I would not treat this as the same kind of casual walk as a flat coastal trail.
The View Higher Up Nokkome Oreum
The view opened up once I got higher. Even with low cloud and hazy weather, I could see broad forest, fields and the inland landscape spreading out below the ridge.

Visit Jeju says the summit can overlook nearby oreum as well as Hallasan and the sea around Hallim when conditions are clear. My visit was much cloudier, so I am not going to pretend I had that full postcard view.
The cloudy weather still made the scale of the landscape clear. It felt much more like inland Jeju than the beach-focused side of Aewol.
Blackish Red Cafe After the Hike
Blackish Red is also in Aewol, but it sits inland rather than directly on the coast. Visit Jeju lists it as a cafe selling bakery items and milk tea, with a large indoor space and an outdoor terrace.
What I photographed was a bright, open interior with large windows facing greenery. There were high counter seats by the windows as well as lower platform-style seating areas farther inside.

The overall space was quiet when I visited. I am not reviewing a specific drink or bakery item here because I do not have a confirmed note of what I ordered. The useful part for this route is the location and the amount of space to sit down after being outside.
Visit Jeju currently lists Blackish Red at 769-10 Haso-ro, Aewol-eup, Jeju City, with a listed last order at 17:30. Hours and menu details can change, so check the current listing before planning the hike around a cafe closing time.
How I Would Plan This Inland Aewol Route
- Start with Nokkome Oreum. Check weather and trail conditions before leaving.
- Wear shoes for a real hike. The route becomes steep, and wet ground makes a difference.
- Allow extra time. Do not plan the cafe around an optimistic hiking time.
- Drive to Blackish Red afterward. Use it as the recovery stop rather than the starting point.
For local driving and search, I use Korean map apps. If you have not used them before, see my NAVER Map guide for Korea.
This route makes more sense for travelers with a car than for someone trying to move around Aewol only by foot. The two stops are inland, and the main value is being able to move directly from the trail area to the cafe.
I visited Blackish Red on September 21, 2026, and Nokkome Oreum on September 26, 2026. I am combining them here because they fit one practical inland Aewol route, not because I visited them on the same day.
